LIBRARY SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

The Sullivan Free Library serves the Town of Sullivan (population 14,991) with two buildings, one located in the village of Chittenango and one in the hamlet of Bridgeport.  Since 1991, the library has issued over 13,400 library cards.  Approximately 140 people use the library daily, with a yearly attendance of over 53,000; 60% of whom are children.  Our Bridgport building is open 44 hours per week and our Chittenango building is open 58 hours per week.

While population in our area has been stable, our library circulation has steadily grown. Due to the opening of our new building in Chittenango and because of the downturn in the economy in 2008, both of our buildings have seen large increases in the number of people using our services. In 2008, we issued library cards to over 800 new users in Chittenango--an incredible 275% increase over the number of new users in 2007--and to over 230 new users in Bridgport--a 60% increase there! By the end of 2008, over 93,000 items were borrowed from the library, including books, audio books, music tapes and CD’s, videos and equipment.

The Sullivan Free Library is a member of the Mid-York library system, a consortium that serves 43 libraries in Madison, Oneida and Herkimer counties. This allows our patrons to borrow materials from those 42 other libraries, significantly increasing the requests we are able to fill locally. Of the 43 member libraries, the Sullivan Free Library has the 9th highest circulation. Resources include a collection of over 52,000 books, 3,000 audiovisual materials, and 2,700 periodicals.  The library provides an electronic catalog, including online databases, that is available to patrons from their home computers.
