LIBRARY SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

The Sullivan Free Library serves the Town of Sullivan (population 14,991) with two buildings, one located in the village of Chittenango and one in the hamlet of Bridgeport.  Since 1991, over 10,299 library cards have been issued.  Population in this area has been stable, yet our library circulation has steadily increased.   In 2001, more than 84,000 items were borrowed from the library, including books, audio books, music tapes and CD’s, videos and equipment.

The Sullivan Free Library is a member of the Mid-York library system, a consortium that serves 43 libraries in Madison, Oneida and Herkimer counties. This allows our patrons to borrow materials from those 42 other libraries, significantly increasing the requests we are able to fill. Of the 43 member libraries, the Sullivan Free Library has the 10th highest circulation. Resources include a collection of over 50,000 books, 3,000 audiovisual materials, and 2,700 periodicals.  The library provides an electronic catalog, including online databases, that is available to patrons from their home computers.

Approximately 140 people use the library daily with a yearly attendance of over 53,000.   60% of that figure represents children.  The library is open 44 hours per week.
